Sweet Country im rauen Norden Australiens in den späten 1920er Jahren: Der Aborigine Sam Kelly führt ein ruhiges Leben als Arbeiter für den wohlwollenden Prediger Fred Smith. Doch dann kehrt der verbitterte Kriegsveteran Harry Marsh von der Westfront zurück und wird zu Sams neuem Vorgesetzten. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Lizzie und seiner Tochter soll er für Harry einen Vorposten renovieren. Doch die Männer stehen sich zunehmend feindselig gegenüber und schließlich tötet Sam Harry aus Notwehr. Anschließend muss der Ureinwohner vor der von Sergeant Fletcher geleiteten Polizei fliehen und durchquert mit seiner schwangeren Frau das Outback.
